Ceramic
production in Deruta is documented from at least the 14th c. and is still
one of the major supplies of the international market. The town has
many interesting ceramic shops selling traditional as well as new creative
modern tableware and decorative pieces.
The
important production of woven fabrics in Umbria dates back to medieval
times. In fact, the tablecloth depicted in Leonardo da Vinci’s famous Last
Supper is Umbrian. Montefalco and Spoleto produce exquisite
fabrics, decorated with traditional medieval and Renaissance motifs,
for making tablecloths, towels, bedspreads, curtains and other home furnishings.
The area around Lake Trasimeno is famous for lace and needlework.
Umbria
also has numerous small industries that produce fine cashmere, wool, silk
and cotton wearing apparel for international fashion designers, many
of which are open to the public. |
